Virginia Tech statistics

• 24% of Virginia Tech female undergraduate students reported at least one incident of physical or sexual violence in the academic year of 1999-2000.

Sexual assault

• On a college campus with a female student body of 10,000, an estimated 350 rapes or attempted rapes occur each year.1
• The majority of acquaintance rapes are committed against women between the ages of 15 and 24.1
• Sexual assault can occur at any time. The majority of sexual assaults occur in the evening between 6 pm and 6 am.1
• In 90% of sexual assaults that occur on college campuses, the victim knows the perpetrator.1
• Alcohol is a factor in 90% of sexual assaults that occur on college campuses.1
• 76% of rapes will go unreported.1

Relationship violence

• Research indicates that 20–30% of college dating relationships have included incidents of both verbal and physical abuse.3
• It is estimated that 1 in 3 college students has experienced an abusive dating relationship.2
• Every 15 seconds, a woman is battered.1

Stalking

• 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetime.2
• In the US, approximately 1 million women and 400,000 men are stalked each year.5
• According to the National Violence Against Women Survey (1997), 1 in 12 women has been stalked.
• 77% of stalking victims are female and 87% stalking perpetrators are male.2
• 80% of campus stalking victims knew their stalkers.2
• Overall, 83.1% of stalking incidents were NOT reported to police or campus law enforcement.1
• The average duration of stalking is 1.8 years.2
• 13% of the college women had been stalked since the school year began.5

Cyberstalking

• In 2003, 38% of cyberstalking cases escalated to incidents of offline stalking.5
